FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PATIO COVERS.
What's the difference between a patio cover and an awning?
A patio cover is a permanent structure, usually with its own posts; an awning is typically mounted to the house and may retract. Covers give more year-round protection and can carry fans and lighting. Awnings give you the choice of sun or shade.
Solid or lattice?
Solid blocks sun and rain completely and keeps the space usable in winter. Lattice gives filtered light and a more open feel, and stays cooler underneath in summer heat. In the Inland Empire most people who want the patio usable in July lean solid with good height.
Do patio covers need a permit?
Permanent covers generally do, and requirements differ between cities and counties across our service area. Check with your building department before ordering.
Can a patio cover attach to an existing California room?
Yes, and it's a common request in newer tracts. The critical detail is the join between the existing roof and the new structure — that's where poorly built extensions leak.
Can a patio cover carry fans, lights or heaters?
A solid cover can, and that's one of its main advantages over fabric. Tell us at the design stage so the wiring route and the clearances for any heater are built in rather than bolted on afterwards.
